Bead of the Week

jade hookSAVE 20% WITH SAVE20 COUPON for this and anything else in the shop. This is a lovely hand-carved pendant of natural Nephrite Jade from New Zealand. The hei matu, or fish hook, has endured since pre-colonial times (prior to the 18th century) and symbolizes abundance, and a respect for sea. The design represents the special relationship Maori people have with fishing (historically they lived from fisheries and depended on the sea for food gathering) and Tangaroa, god of the sea. Designs range from the ultra-realistic through to more conceptual styles, and wearing one is said to bring good fortune when traveling across oceans.

This beautiful piece measures approx. 45 mm long (approx.. 1 3/4") x approx. 23 mm. (just shy of 1") at its widest point. Thickness is approx. 3 mm. Hole at top for hanging is approx. 3 mm. wide.

kazuri beadsI hope you'll have time to visit the inspirational web site about Kazuri beads: http://www.kazuribeadsusa.com/story.php

In summary, back in 1975, a pioneering woman set up a fledging business making beads in a small shed in her back garden in Kenya. She started by hiring two disadvantaged women, and quickly realized that there were many more women in need of jobs. So Kazuri Beads was created and began its long and successful journey as a help
center for needy women of this region. Those most in need are hired to create unique and beautiful African beads and jewelry. The handcrafted beads are made with clay from the Mt Kenya area and are beautiful, as you can see from this image.

Kazuri, the Swahili word for 'small and beautiful' is now known worldwide for its hand-painted ceramic jewelry. They offer a kaleidoscope of beads that shine with African colors distinctive Kenyan art. We chose one most special necklace of Kazuri beads to feature at our Pinterest site 'Distinctive Handcrafted Jewelry': http://tinyurl.com/bbwm69w
